Last Saturday was the annual Furry Scurry walk in Denver's Washington Park. It is an annual fundraising event for the Denver Dumb Friends League. It is a two-mile walk around the lake in the park for dogs and their owners. It is the largest single animal fundraising event in the country.
This year, the 15th year of the Scurry, 10,000+ people and 5,000+ dogs showed up at the park to walk and raise money for the DDFL. The entry fee was $50 each. The event was a huge success and raised an estimated $830,000! And, it was great fun!
Imagine, 10,000 people and 5,000 dogs all having fun and peacefully participating in a fundraising event that is hugely sucess every year, no matter what the economy is like.
So, here are some questions I have: could the same concept be used to raise money to feed the hungry? Imagine it. People and dogs having fun together on a beautiful Saturday morning walking to raise money to feed the hungry.
If every capital city in the U.S. hosted one such event and raised, say, $500,000 each, that would raise $26 million to feed the hungry people of the world.
I recently read that 1 in10 Americans goes to bed hungry every day and that number is increasing as food prices soar. We know there are huge food shortages in Egypt, India, Pakistan, and at least 20 other countries.
Whay do you think about a Furry-Scurry-type event to feed the hungry? Is it feasible? Do you think people would care about the cause of feeding the hungry as much as they care about providing for the sweet shelter animals?
I think there could be a nice blending of the two causes to benefit both animals and the hungry. What do you think?
