It's Memorial Weekend . Tomorrow, Saturday, I'm going to the Colorado Rockies baseball game. They play the New York Mets. For some reason, this has brought up lots of memories for me of happy times and loved ones.
You see, I love New York - the state, that is, not the Mets. My first visit to New York was when I was 19 and spent two weeks with my brother and his fantastic wife in the heart of New York City. My brother spent most of his working years on the New York stage. From "Hello, Dolly, and countless other shows, to "Annie" from opening night to closing, his life was full of colorful friends and behind-the-scenes memories.
I was witness to several Broadway-stage blunders from Frank Langella as "Dracula" inadvertently catching the fainting heroine by her breast and cracking up the whole show, but most of all the startled heroine, to the policeman in "Annie" chasing Sandy, the dog, off the stage. The policeman tripped during the chase, slid across the stage and into the orchestra pit! He was embarrassed, but fine, and the show was on hold for several minutes until the laughter died down.
Again, I love New York. So alive. So resiliant. The world in microcosm. From Broadway to the Tappanzee Bridge. Tarrytown, Sunnyside, Bricktown, and the beautiful finger lakes district and Ithaca! So much beauty. So much "aliveness."
I love New York. (Did I already mention that?) But tomorrow, I will be cheering for the Colorado Rockies. Go! Rockies!
Happy weekend friends!
